Each month I will highlight individuals making positive change and progress a reality in their communities through commitment, action and passion.

When I think of someone that is completely passionate and dedicated to what they do, Eric Henry is 'the man'. With his innovative thinking and action combined, he has spearheaded major change in his community of Alamance County, NC. His approach to sustainability in textiles and beyond, is affecting positive change not only statewide, but on a national and international level. From organic farming, solar power, and way more, Eric Henry is a pioneer worldwide in terms of changing minds about the way business is done. He is bringing Alamance County out of the past and into the future. If you don't know about Eric Henry, you need to! Check out TSDesigns, Cotton of the Carolina's, and purchase tee-shirts you can be proud of wearing. Off-cuts from TSDesigns tee shirts, that would usually be discarded as scraps, are used as filling for the Beautiful In-Difference Dolls. Thank you, Eric Henry !!

I am proud to be a close friend of Dowoti Desir's. She is a sister to me. Her tireless work over the years has effected positive change and awareness on a national and international level regarding people of the Diaspora.. Her recent book "Goud kase goud," means "Gourds break grouds." In other words, "Break the silence." Among the year's best contributions to Africana Studies, this cross-disciplinary book is a photographic survey of 16 countries that connects the places and personalities of Transatlantic Slave Trade. In 88-pages, using over 70 color images and photographs, author and principle photographer, Dowoti takes readers on a journey to Africa, Europe and the Americas to uncover a tale of human tragedy, dissonance, and triumph related to the Maafa (Great Suffering) of the North Atlantic slave trade and contemporary human rights movements. Check it out here -http://www.conjuringmemory.com/ necessary reading, and crucial document to remind everyone - never forget the ancestors !!

Is a beautiful and inspiring young woman, who I coached (tennis) as a young girl in NYC. She is doing amazing things in her life personally and for her community. Currently a sophomore in college and a tennis coach with the 15love organization - she shows others how life can be lived (and loved) for the better good. She works with refugees in the Albany area as well. Averie, you are absolutely awesome! Thank you for making a difference to so many people in your area. Much respect and love. (call me, we need to play tennis !!)

c o n c r e t e c a n v a sThis collaboration of textiles and concrete, the hard and the soft, coming together to produce these solid structures is outstanding. Not cheap, and maybe not so pretty - but a brilliant product. http://www.concretecanvas.com/
